Don’t Worry, Be Happy

BusyThere’s an old Russian proverb that goes something like, if you don’t think you have enough time to do something, don’t worry, if you’re not dead, you have enough time. And if you die before you get it done, it won’t matter anyway. I need to keep that in mind, especially when I think about what I should have gotten done.

First, I have a project to complete for my former employer and I’ve been procrastinating to the nth degree. It should be easy, maybe not take much more than a couple of hours, but it involves a trip down to their offices and reading some boring accounting stuff and I just couldn’t bring myself to get to it. Lazy, lazy, lazy. Now, I’m on a bit of a deadline and I’m going to have to work on it this afternoon, which means that some of the things I need to do this week may have to be put off.

On top of that, there were phone calls I should have made, I should have shopped for some badly needed tires for the car, gotten some required maintenance done on said car, and worked on some chores around the house. None of that got done.

Then, there is one thing I did that maybe I shouldn’t have done, or didn’t do properly, in the correct spirit — fasting. The Orthodox fast, most weeks twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays. And when they say fast, they mean, fast. No meat, no dairy products, no wine, no oil, it’s called dry eating. We started week before last, and actually I had no problem with it. My wife had to go down to her former employer’s office and I was on my own for lunch, so I went to Chipotle and got a veggie burrito with just black beans, brown rice, a little mild salsa, and some guacamole. I’m not sure it was absolutely strictly in accordance with the fast rules, but close enough, and it allowed be to have enough energy to hardly notice I was fasting. This week was a different story. I forgot what we had on Wednesday, but it didn’t work quite as well, and on Friday we had bean burritos but they didn’t seem to do the trick. I was hungry and worn out most of the day. I used the tiredness from those two days, plus what seemed like extra heavy workouts my trainer put me through, as an excuse not to do the things I should have done.

Then came Saturday and I pigged out, it seemed like I ate everything in sight trying to get my energy back. And guess what, by Saturday night, I was hungry and tired.

The result of all this? Here I am, many things left to do from last week, more jammed up than I should be this week, no tires on the car, no phone calls made, and no relief in sight. Well, at least I’m still looking at things from this side of the roots, so I guess I won’t worry too much.
